Global versus local search: the impact of population sizes on evolutionary algorithm performance

چکیده
In the field of Evolutionary Computation, a common myth that “An Evolutionary Algorithm (EA) will outperform a local search algorithm, given enough runtime and a large-enough population” exists. We believe that this is not necessarily true and challenge the statement with several simple considerations. We then investigate the population size parameter of EAs, as this is the element in the above claim that can be controlled. We conduct a related work study, which substantiates the assumption that there should be an optimal setting for the population size at which a specific EA would perform best on a given problem instance and computational budget. Subsequently, we carry out a large-scale experimental study on 68 instances of the Traveling Salesman Problem with static population sizes that are powers of two between (1+2) and (262 144+ 524 288) EAs as well as with adaptive population sizes. We find that analyzing the performance of the different setups over runtime supports our point of view and the existence of optimal finite population size settings.

Optimization in Uncertain and Complex Dynamic Environments with Evolutionary Methods
In the real world, many of the optimization issues are dynamic, uncertain, and complex in which the objective function or constraints can be changed over time. Consequently, the optimum of these issues is changed nonlinearly. Therefore, the optimization algorithms not only should search the global optimum value in the space but also should follow the path of optimal change in dynamic environmen...
متن کاملA Hybrid Algorithm using Firefly, Genetic, and Local Search Algorithms
In this paper, a hybrid multi-objective algorithm consisting of features of genetic and firefly algorithms is presented. The algorithm starts with a set of fireflies (particles) that are randomly distributed in the solution space; these particles converge to the optimal solution of the problem during the evolutionary stages. Then, a local search plan is presented and implemented for searching s...

Automated Guided Vehicle System (AGVS) provides the flexibility and automation demanded by Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS). However, with the growing concern on responsible management of resource use, it is crucial to manage these vehicles in an efficient way in order reduces travel time and controls conflicts and congestions. This paper presents the development process of a new Memetic Alg...
متن کاملA Proposed Improved Hybrid Hill Climbing Algorithm with the Capability of Local Search for Solving the Nonlinear Economic Load Dispatch Problem
This paper introduces a new hybrid hill-climbing algorithm (HHC) for solving the Economic Dispatch (ED) problem. This algorithm solves the ED problems with a systematic search structure with a global search. It improves the results obtained from an evolutionary algorithm with local search and converges to the best possible solution that grabs the accuracy of the problem. The most important goal...
متن کاملIIR System Identification Using Improved Harmony Search Algorithm with Chaos
Due to the fact that the error surface of adaptive infinite impulse response (IIR) systems is generally nonlinear and multimodal, the conventional derivative based techniques fail when used in adaptive identification of such systems. In this case, global optimization techniques are required in order to avoid the local minima. Harmony search (HS), a musical inspired metaheuristic, is a recently ...
